What is a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)?

A programmable logic controller, or simply PLC, is an industrial computer designed for the control of manufacturing processes or robotic devices where reliable control, simple programming and fault diagnosis is necessary.

How does a PLC work?

The PLC controller receives information from industrial sensors and other input devices, processes the data, and triggers outputs based on pre-programmed parameters. Depending on the input devices, a PLC can monitor and record data such as machine productivity or temperature, it can start and stop processes and generate alarms if a machine fails plus much more.

Programmable logic controllers come in a wide range of variants from basic small-scale units with a limited range of input/outputs and restricted ability to units with a built-in HMI and computer interface to allow you to program directly into a PLC control panel instead of using software and a remote PC.
