What is a Star Delta Starter?

A Star Delta Starter is one of the most popular forms of motor starter in use today when compared to other types of induction motor starting methods. Star Delta Starters are used for cage induction motors using the delta connected stator winding. Most induction motors are started using the DOL method, but when very powerful induction motors are started, they can create a disturbance of the supply line voltage due to large starting current surges. To limit this starting current surge, a powerful induction motor is started at a reduced voltage and then has its full supply voltage reconnected when it runs up to near full speed.

How do Star Delta Starters work?

Star Delta Starters consists of three contactors, a thermal overload relay and a timer. The contactors are smaller than the contactor used in a DOL Starter as they control the winding currents only.  During starting, the motor windings are connected in a star configuration which reduces the voltage across each winding and the torque by a factor of three. After a short period of time the winding are reconfigured as delta and the motor runs normally.
