LiDAR Sensors

Light detection and ranging, or LiDAR, as it’s more commonly known, is a well-established and sought-after remote sensing technology. Ideal for measuring distances, LiDAR was originally designed for use on planes for scanning the ground, but in recent years that the technology has become more popular and cost-effective for industrial applications.

LiDAR is used in a variety of applications to accurately calculate geospatial measurements and utilises eye-safe laser beams to create 3D representations of a surveyed environment.

LiDAR works by continuously emitting hundreds of thousands of light waves and measuring how long it takes for the light to hit an object or surface and then return to the sensor. The sensor then uses this time to calculate the object’s distance. With this data, LiDAR can create a point cloud and subsequently a 3D map visualisation. With LiDAR this information can then be used to control or facilitate the action of other systems, such as a controlling a remote vehicle.
