A heat sink is heat exchanger that transfers the heat generated by an electromechanical, mechanical or electronic device to a medium which is either air or a coolant. A heat sink is designed to maximize its surface area in contact with the cooling medium surrounding it, where it is dissipated away from the device, keeping the device's temperature at optimal levels. Air velocity, material, protrusion design and surface treatment are factors that determine the performance of a heat sink.
Heat sinks are used with high-power semiconductor devices such as power transistors, din rail mounted electrical devices and optoelectronics, where the heat dissipation ability of the component itself is insufficient to moderate its temperature.
Heat sinks are generally constructed from copper or aluminium. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat, Aluminium heat sinks are a low-cost, lightweight alternative to copper heat sinks with a lower thermal conductivity than copper.
A heat sink transfers thermal energy from a high temperature device to a lower temperature medium, such as air or coolant, refrigerants or oil. In thermodynamics a heat sink is a heat reservoir that can absorb a set amount of heat without significantly changing temperature. Heat sinks transfer heat by convection, radiation, and conduction when their temperature is higher than their surroundings.
