A flowmeter is a sensory device that is used to measure linear, nonlinear, volumetric or the mass flow rate of a liquid or a gas passing through it. Flowmeters typically consist of a primary device, transducer and a transmitter. As fluid passes through the primary device the transducer senses this movement and then the transmitter produces a usable flow signal from the transducer signal.
Flowmeters come in many variants including volumetric flowmeters that measure the volume of fluid passing through. Velocity flowmeters that measure the velocity of a flowing stream, typical examples include magnetic, turbine, ultrasonic, and vortex shedding and fluidic flowmeters. Mass flowmeters measure the mass flow of a flowing stream and include devices such as Coriolis mass and thermal flowmeters. Other flowmeter variants include insertion flowmeters that measure flow at one location in a pipe and flowmeters that measure liquid flowing in an open channel.
