Auto Transformers

An Autotransformer is an electrical transformer which features just one winding. A part of the single winding is common to the primary and the secondary circuits helping with possible interference or disturbance isolation.

The high-voltage current flows through the series and common winding and the low-voltage circuit flows through the common winding. This adds to the current in the high-voltage circuit providing a common winding current.  Autotransformers are used as either step-up or step-down single or 3-phase voltages to the level required and are ideally for applications where the electrical equipment being used requires a matched voltage.

Autotransformers are primarily used to either step up or step down single or three phase line voltages to desired levels and are best used in applications where the line voltage needs to be matched to a piece of electrical equipment.
