What are Motor Drives?

A motor drive is an electronic device that harnesses and controls the electrical energy that is being supplied to a specific electrical motor. The motor drive feeds electricity into the motor in varying amounts and at differing frequencies, controlling the electric motor’s speed and torque. Motor drives can also control the ramp-up and ramp-down of a motor during stop and start sequences reducing the mechanical stress in motor control applications such as pumps and elevators.
