Ultrasonic Proximity Sensors
Ultrasonic proximity sensors utilise transmitted and reflected ultrasonic waves as a method of object detection, and are a non-contact sensor. Robust and reliable, ultrasonic sensors are very versatile they
can be used in almost all environmental conditions.
Ultrasonic sensors operate by emitting a short bust of
ultrasonic sound at a specific frequency towards the intended target, when this
sound is returned back to the ultrasonic proximity sensor it records the time
difference. This resultant time taken is used to calculate the distance between
the object or material in question and the ultrasonic sensor. Typical
applications for ultrasonic sensors include; robotics, liquid level control, automotive
assembly processes, person detection amongst many others.
Ultrasonic
proximity sensors can be affected by noise interference and at close
proximity some variants will have a blind spot, the surface finish, material
and angle of the target object can also affect the functionality of the sensor.
Also, the relative temperature and the humidity of the ultrasonic sensors working environment can impact its resolution and accuracy. If detecting metal an inductive proximity sensor may resolve these issues.
