Flexible Beam Couplings
A beam coupling is a device used to transmit torque between
two shafts. Unlike rigid coupling, flexible beam coupling allows for angular
misalignment, parallel off-set and axial motion between shafts. It consists of a
single piece of material and is also known as helical coupling because material
is removed in a helical pattern along the length to make it flexible.
Flexible beam coupling is generally made from aluminium alloy, stainless steel,
and less commonly titanium and acetal. Aluminium beam coupling is lightweight
and well-suited to applications requiring a high level of responsiveness, while
stainless steel provides greater strength and robustness. Common applications
include attaching rotary
encoders to shafts and motion control for robotics. Flexible beam coupling
is also used in food, medical and aerospace applications.
