What are Rotary Switches?

Rotary Switches, as the name suggests, operate when rotated and are often used in applications that demand 2 or more switching and circuit changing operations to be carried out by the same switch.

How do Rotary Switches Work?

A Rotary Switch, often called a Cam Switch, or a Rotary Actuator, contains a central spindle and a contact arm with an array of terminals arranged in a circle around the spindle. When the rotary switch is turned it can switch between these terminals are their associated circuits, there is usually a detent system that provides positive feedback in the form of a click and a degree to retention ensuring the circuit is held until the switch is turned again. Rotary switches can contain many terminal layers within its construction allowing for a greater range of switching options.

Rotary switches are today commonly found in many industrial applications such as applying or cutting the primary circuit power and for mains switch applications, or for switching between various operational systems of an industrial process.
