Microswitches

Microswitches, also known as snap-action switches, are mechanically operated electrical switches consisting of a spring-loaded actuator that opens and closes a set of terminals when pressure is applied to the actuator. After the actuator is pushed home, a microswitch's contacts change state. When the plunger switch is in the released position, the circuit is open, when depressed the circuit closes and can carry current. Very little effort is required to actuate these switches.

Reliable and inexpensive, microswitches are differentiated by their electrical characteristics, are small in structure and are designed to carry a low current and voltage.

What are Microswitches used for?

Microswitches are often found being utilised within safety processes, preventing a machine from being operated or monitoring a safety door or guard. Further examples include - safety interlock within a washing machine door, vending machines as a levelling device or in lift doors where they operate as a safety switch. Microswitches, much like their larger brother the limit switch, are actuated by a plunger, button, a roller or a lever, leaf spring, etc.

Some Microswitches can be very sensitive, lending themselves to being used in very precise equipment where can be utilised in measuring the flow of gas through a system.
