Thermocouples

Thermocouples are devices used to measures operating and processing temperatures. The basic construction utilised inside a thermocouple consists of two wires of dissimilar materials joined together at one end, creating a junction. When exposed to changes in atmospheric temperature this joined wire junction a measurable voltage is created which can be used to measure the relevant temperature.

Thermocouples are available in a variety of forms each with different characteristics such as their temperature range and construction durability. Thermocouples are defined by  letters such as K . The letters refer to the construction materials used; types J, K, T & E thermocouples are base metal thermocouples and types R, S and B are noble metal versions. These letters and thus their construction materials determine the temperature the respective thermocouple can be used in. For example, a type J thermocouple is iron and copper-nickel in construction and operates from 0°C to 816°C, depending on other characteristics such as sheath material etc.

Thermocouples are used in a variety of temperature measuring applications including vehicle systems, boiler and heating control sensors, over safety features, industrial temperature probs, thermostats and many more.

Kempston Controls stocks a select range of thermocouples from market leading brands such as Gefran and Crouzet designed to suit whatever your thermocouple requirements are.
