Incremental Encoders

What are Incremental Encoders?

An incremental rotary encoder is an electromechanical device with two output signals which issue electronic pulses when movement is detected. Using both of these signals it is possible to indicate when movement takes place and in which direction.

Some rotary encoders also feature an additional output signal which is used to determine if the encoder is at a particular reference position. Other incremental encoders may also have a status alarm output that can indicate problems with the encoder.

What can Incremental Encoders be used for?

An Incremental rotary encoder only reports on changes in position and direction changes and not the absolute position, an external incremental encoder interface to track and report on the encoders absolute position is required for this functionality. Incremental encoders report position changes much faster than most types of absolute encoders.

The very low latency of an incremental encoder means it can monitor the position of a high-speed mechanism in near real-time making them ideal for precise measurement and control in position and velocity applications.

Kempston Controls stocks an impressive range of incremental encoders from market leading manufacturers such as BallufHengstlerSICK and more designed to suit many applications.
