Variable Resistors help you control the current flow through an electric circuit and are available in a range of different styles including Potentiometers and Rheostats. Variable Resistors can be used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications and have set maximum and minimum value. You can set the resistance between these levels which alters the current allowing you to control an electrical device.

A Variable Resistor's role in a circuit is to allow the amount of resistance to be changed, when the resistance is decreased the flow of the current increases and vice versa. There are a wide variety of different types of variable resistors available with various functions, Potentiometers are used as voltage regulators and are often referred to as pots, coming in slider pot, trimmer pot, thumbwheel and other styles. Unlike the Potentiometer, the Rheostat, often used for motor control, has 2 connections, one is made to the end of a resistive element and the other to the wiper end of the variable resistor.
