Surge Protection
A surge protector , also know as a transient voltage surge suppressor, is a
device within an electrical circuit that has been designed to help protect
electrical devices within the electrical circuit from voltage spikes (transient
voltages). Voltage spikes can be extremely damaging to electrical equipment and
a surge protector deals with these by either blocking the spike by using
inductors, shorting or by using capacitors. Inductors inhibit sudden changes in
current, while capacitors inhibit sudden voltage changes. While shorting is
achieved using spark gaps, discharge tubes, metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and Zener
semiconductors which conduct when a voltage threshold is reached.
Where are Surge Protectors used?
Surge protectors can be found in
many electrical installations both in single and 3 phase versions, protecting
process control and automation systems, power distribution
panels or other similar
industrial and commercial electrical supply systems. Surge
protection devicess (SPDs) are typically available in a variety of mounting options including
DIN rail and panel mount versions and also as a screw-in accessory for contactors amongst others.
