What is a DOL Starter?

A DOL Starter is a Direct-On-line motor starter or across-the-line starter are used as a simple motor starter for large electric induction motors providing full-line voltage to the motor terminals. DOL Starters essentially operate as a basic stop/start switch for an electric motor and are often fitted with overload protection devices to prevent short circuits and overheating.

What are DOL Starters used for?

Direct-On-Line Starters are the most basic form of starter connecting the motor directly to the electrical power supply through a three-phase contactor. The DOL Starter usually consists of a Contactor, Circuit Breaker and an Overload Relay for essential protection against any damage.

DOL Starters are utilised in a wide variety of industrial applications where reliable motor driving is required in applications including water pumps, fans and workshop machinery. A variant of the DOL Motor Starter is the Reversible DOL Starter that can run a motor either forwards or backwards, ideal for when reversing the direction of a conveyor system is required.

Many variants of DOL Starters are suitable for harsh work environments such as those used to control motors in dusty environment (depending on their construction) there are also ATEX rated DOL Starters for environments with potential explosive risks.
