What is a hall effect current sensor used for?

A Hall effect current sensor is used to measure the magnitude of a magnetic field and its output voltage is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength experienced. Hall effect sensors are generally used for proximity sensing, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications.

Commonly used in automotive applications, rotary hall effect sensors are utilised to time the speed of wheels and shafts for ignition timing, linear hall-effect sensors can be used to detect throttle positions, hydraulic cylinders, and gearing. Hall effect sensors can also be found in brushless DC electric motors to detect the position of the permanent magnet.

Are hall effect sensors reliable?

A hall effect current sensors are very reliable can typically be operated at higher frequencies than a mechanical switch and they aren’t affected by environmental contaminants. Hall effect sensors are a sealed unit meaning they can be used in extreme environments.
