Monitoring Relays

Monitoring relays are a form of relay that trips a circuit breaker when a fault is detected in either single or 3-phase applications. Essentially a monitoring relay is an electrically controlled switch that is used to disconnect or connect power within an electrical circuit.

Your average monitoring relay is a step above the average regular relay, featuring adjustable operating conditions, as opposed to regular relays switching according to a fixed threshold. Monitoring relays measure set parameters, for example - voltage or temperature and will cause a circuit breaker to trip when a set parameter is either too high or low.

Monitoring relays are utilised across a broad spectrum of applications depending largely on what is being monitored. Monitoring relays, as the name suggests, monitor certain aspects of an electrical supply, they can protect against overcurrent if monitoring current, or they can detect a low frequency if frequency is the factor being monitored.

Monitoring relays come in a variety of types defined by what they are intended to measure, including voltage, current, temperature, insulation, and frequency. Other relay types include thermistor monitoring relays, phase monitoring relays and ground fault relays.

Kempston Controls, a leading supplier of electrical and electronic components, stocks an extensive range of monitoring relays from all the leading brands including Siemens, ABB, Telecontrol, Carlo Gavazzi, Crompton Instruments, Lovato and many more.
