Ribbon Cable / Flat Cable

Ribbon cables or flat cables, which are often referred to as multiplanar cables, consist of small, thin cables placed parallel to each other forming a wide flat cable which looks similar to a ribbon.

Ribbon cable is predominantly used in electronic systems that require multiple data buses to link internal peripherals, such as disk drives to their respective drive controllers. To avoid reverse connections ribbon cables are colour coded, with one edge of the cable marked with a red stripe which corresponds to pin 1 of its respective connector, or in a variety of colours for each cable. Available in a wide variety of ways from 2 way to 40 and beyond.
