KVM Switches

A KVM Switch device, or keyboard Video and Mouse, is a piece of hardware commonly used in Data Centres, that is used to allow the control of multiple computers with one or more keyboards, video monitors or mice.

USB keyboards, mice, and I/O devices are generally the most common devices that you will find connected to a KVM Switch. Different KVM switches offer different methods of connecting the computers the KVM Switch may have native connectors on the device where standard keyboard, monitor and mouse cables can be attached. Other switches may feature a single DB25 connector connecting the KVM with three independent keyboards, monitors and mice.

The cheaper KVM Switches are usually mechanical in nature with multi-pole rotary switches used to select between computers. This type of KVM has a limited number of sharing options, perhaps two or four computers, with a total limit imposed by possible switch configurations. More advanced KVM units feature advanced electronics as opposed to physical switches, offering the potential to control a larger quantity of computers from a single arrangement of keyboard and mouse.

KVM Switches are common in data centres and installations that utilise numerous computer and server networks with a limited requirement for human interfacing. Give our dedicated sales team a call on +44 (0) 1933 411411 or use the contact form above to discuss your KVM requirements.
